Art has always been the heartbeat of the Hokianga, and it is currently experiencing a renaissance with galleries in Rawene, Kohukohu and in Opononi creating a kind of mini Hokianga art trail that is attracting national attention. In 2013 the historic Andrewes General store in Rawene, dating back to the early 1900's was purchased and lovingly restored. Now called No 1 Parnell it is a destination for visitors from across the region and national and international tourists who enjoy a coffee while watching life unfold across the water, browse a rich selection of artwork by regional artists, books by Far North writers, and a women’s designer fashion boutique.
